Being sentenced to a wheelchair is ultimately being sentenced to death. Wheelchair users die of complications of being in a wheelchair b/c doctors, Medicare, and others don’t realize or just don’t care ... b/c “the problem” solves itself that way. I am on my 2nd manual wheelchair. Each one was delivered in a box, UPS ... no measurements, no consultations, just a primary care doctor's script for a generic over-gloried handcart for a gimp, fulfilled by a Medicare provider. When I tried to go through a specialist to get "evaluated" for not just a powered wheelchair, but a STANDING power wheelchair, I was shot-down by the process. After endless doctor's appointments, vendor home-evaluations, PT evaluations, OT evaluations, etc., I was denied. A lot of time, energy, money, & other resources down the drain ... FOR NOTHING. They all hope I will be dead in a few year like my brother. He died of non-mobility, too.
